2018 : Antwerp baroque city, signed by Rubens

Day 1

Antwerp

Guided walk through the historical centre of Antwerp – city of PP Rubens.

This tour begins in the vicinity of the Scheldt, the river that brought Antwerp wealth and enabled its artists to flourish. You’ll walk down the neighbouring narrow streets passing stonemasons’ houses and bankers’ residences into the citycentre, and end your tour at one of the many highlights: the Cathedral of our Lady, where four masterpieces by Rubens are on permanent display.

 

Visit of a diamond workshop and/or the new visitors centre on Silver and Diamonds.

Day 2

PP Rubens

Guided visit of the House of Rubens (opening of a new Rubens Experience Centre next to the museum foreseen in autumn 2019) - Rubens and his family lived in this palatial setting for well over 25 years and it is here that the artist created the lion’s share of his work.

Tip: expo "Rubens’ Return" (29/08//18 - end 2018).

 

Guided visit of Mechelen

The impressive town of Mechelen is situated between Brussels and Antwerp on the Dijle which here is still tidal. Since the 16th Century it has been the spiritual capital of the region as the seat of the Archbishop as well as the headquarters of an archipiscopal seminar. It has the only carillon school in the world. During your walk you will see the Market Square with the St. Rombouts cathedral, the town hall and cloth hall, the Palace of Margareta of Austria, the guildhouse ‘De Zalm’ with a beautiful Renaissance façade, the Royal Manufactory of Gaspard De Wit (tapestry), the Church of Our Lady-across-the-Dyle and the Church of St. John.

Guided visit of a local brewery with beertasting in Mechelen

Visit of the visitor’s centre of brewery De Koninck with tasting in Antwerp.

Day 3

Plantin-Moretus museum

Boattour through the harbour of Antwerp.

From the water you see the port (second-largest in Europe) from a completely different angle, in the docks and on the Scheldt. You get a fantastic view of the activities on the terminals, sail past giant container carriers hundreds of metres long, and experience the huge extent of the vast port area

or

Visit of the temporary exposition ‘Luc Tuymans on Baroque’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art MUHKA (01/06-16/09/18).

 

Visit of the renovated Plantin-Moretus museum (UNESCO world heritage), the house of Rubens’ good friend and the place where many of his engravings were printed.

or

Visit of the House of Rockox, a treasure trove of baroque art and former residence of the Antwerp mayor at the time, Nicolaas Rockox, friend and patron of Rubens.

Day 4

Brussels

Guided city tour of Brussels and visit of the Museum of Fine Arts/Oldmasters museum - The remarkable collection of Old Master, witnessing to a rich and creative past, covers a period running from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Here you will find paintings of exceptional value by the Flemish Primitives, along with many artists from the fertile periods of the Flemish Renaissance and Baroque: Memling, Bosch, Bruegel, Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens and others...

 

Visit of a local chocolate manufacturer and tasting.
